Base64 is an encoding, not encryption — anyone can decode it. Text is encoded as UTF-8.

Encode any text as Base64 or decode Base64 back into readable text. Works with emojis and non-English characters via UTF-8.

How to use the Base64 Encoder / Decoder

  1. Choose encode or decode.
  2. Paste your text or Base64 string.
  3. Copy the result.

How it works

Base64 represents binary data using 64 printable characters (A–Z, a–z, 0–9, + and /). Every 3 bytes become 4 characters, so encoded data is about 33% larger, padded with = signs. It is used for email attachments, data URLs and API tokens. URL-safe Base64 replaces + and / with - and _. Base64 is encoding, not encryption.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 secure?

No — anyone can decode it. Use encryption to protect data.

Why does Base64 end with =?

Padding: = or == fills the last group when the input is not a multiple of 3 bytes.

Why is Base64 larger?

It uses 4 characters for every 3 bytes, about 33% more.

Does this support emojis?

Yes — text is encoded as UTF-8 first.

Where is Base64 used?

Email attachments (MIME), data URLs that embed images in HTML and CSS, JSON Web Tokens, basic HTTP authentication headers and storing binary data in text-only formats.
