How it works

Military time numbers the hours of the day from 00 to 23, so there is no AM or PM. From 0100 to 1259 the hours match the 12-hour clock (add “AM” before noon). From 1300 to 2359, subtract 12 to get the PM time: 1700 − 1200 = 5:00 PM. Midnight is 0000 and noon is 1200.

To go the other way, add 12 to any PM hour except 12 PM, and write 12 AM as 00. Times are written with four digits and usually no colon, and are spoken as “zero seven hundred” or “nineteen forty-five”.
