Measurements are for the visible screen; the TV body is usually 1–3 inches wider and taller. A common guide is to sit 1–1.5× the diagonal away for 4K.

Find out how wide and tall a TV screen is from its diagonal size, and how far to sit from it.

How to use the TV Size Calculator

  1. Enter the diagonal screen size in inches.
  2. Choose the aspect ratio (16:9 for TVs).
  3. Read the width, height and viewing distance.

How it works

TV sizes are measured diagonally. For a 16:9 screen, width = diagonal × 0.8716 and height = diagonal × 0.4903: a 55″ TV’s screen is about 47.9″ × 27″. Add 1–3 inches for the frame and stand when checking whether it fits. For 4K TVs a common guideline is to sit 1–1.5 times the diagonal away.
