How to use the Discount Calculator
- Enter the original price.
- Enter the discount percentage.
- Optionally add your sales tax rate.
How it works
Savings = price × discount ÷ 100. Sale price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). With tax, total = sale price × (1 + tax ÷ 100).
How to calculate a discount
- Convert the discount to a decimal: 25% → 0.25.
- Multiply by the price to get the savings: $80 × 0.25 = $20.
- Subtract the savings from the price: $80 − $20 = $60. Or do it in one step: $80 × (1 − 0.25) = $60.

Stacked discounts and coupons
“Take an extra 10% off sale prices” is applied to the already-reduced price, so the discounts multiply rather than add: 30% off followed by 10% off is 0.7 × 0.9 = 0.63 of the original — 37% off, not 40%. Run the calculator twice (use the first sale price as the new original price) to see the final amount.
Discounts and sales tax
In most US states, sales tax is charged on the price you actually pay after discounts, so enter your local rate to see the total at the register. Rates differ by state and city; check your receipt or your state’s revenue department for the exact figure. Manufacturer coupons can be treated differently from store discounts for tax purposes in some states.
Finding the original price
If you know the sale price and the discount, divide: a $45 item marked “25% off” originally cost 45 ÷ 0.75 = $60. To find what percentage off you are getting from two prices, use the percentage change calculator with the original as the old value. For any other percentage question, see the percentage calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 25% off?
Multiply the price by 0.75. $80 at 25% off is $60.
How do I calculate 30% off $50?
$50 × 0.7 = $35.
Do two discounts add up?
No — they multiply. 30% then 10% off is 37% off in total.
