How it works
Roman numerals use seven letters: I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000. Symbols are written from largest to smallest and added together. A smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted, but only in six combinations: IV (4), IX (9), XL (40), XC (90), CD (400) and CM (900).
To convert a number, handle each place value separately: 1994 = 1000 + 900 + 90 + 4 = M + CM + XC + IV = MCMXCIV. A symbol is never repeated more than three times in a row.
