The F to C formula in one line

°C = (°F − 32) ÷ 1.8. Subtract 32, then divide by 1.8 (the same as multiplying by 5/9). For example, 70 °F − 32 = 38, and 38 ÷ 1.8 = 21.11 °C. The full explanation is on the Fahrenheit to Celsius page.

Quick ways to convert F to C in your head

1. Subtract 30, then halve. Good enough for weather:

Subtract 30 and halve vs exact
FahrenheitEstimateExact

40 °F5 °C4.4 °C
50 °F10 °C10 °C

80 °F25 °C26.7 °C
90 °F30 °C32.2 °C
100 °F35 °C37.8 °C

2. Learn the anchor points. 32 °F = 0 °C, 50 °F = 10 °C, 68 °F = 20 °C, 86 °F = 30 °C and 104 °F = 40 °C. Every 18 °F is 10 °C, so you can step between them.

3. Remember a few “feels like” numbers. 60s °F are mild (about 16–21 °C), 70s are pleasant (21–26 °C), 80s warm (27–32 °C), 90s hot (32–37 °C) and 100 °F is roughly 38 °C.

Fahrenheit numbers you will see in the US

Visiting or moving to the United States means meeting Fahrenheit on thermostats, ovens, pools and food labels. Here is what the common numbers mean in Celsius:

Changing the units instead of converting

If you mostly think in Celsius, switch your devices: on iPhone go to Settings → General → Language & Region → Temperature; on a Mac, System Settings → General → Language & Region; on Android, open your weather app’s settings. Many US thermostats and car dashboards also have a °F/°C option in their settings. Ovens and pool heaters usually do not — keep this F to C converter handy for those.

Reading an American recipe in °C

US recipes give oven temperatures in Fahrenheit, usually in 25-degree steps. Convert, then round to the nearest 10 °C, because that is how metric ovens are marked. If your oven has a fan, reduce by about 20 °C more. A few examples:

Recipe saysExactConventional ovenFan oven
300 °F148.9 °C150 °C130 °C
325 °F162.8 °C160 °C140 °C
350 °F176.7 °C180 °C160 °C

425 °F218.3 °C220 °C200 °C
450 °F232.2 °C230 °C210 °C

Candy and frying temperatures need the exact value, not a rounded one — use the candy temperature converter or the frying oil chart.

Reading a US weather report

American forecasts give highs and lows in °F, and in summer and winter they often add a heat index or wind chill (“feels like”). Both are in Fahrenheit too. A forecast of “high 95, heat index 105” means about 35 °C that feels like about 41 °C. “Low 10, wind chill −5” means about −12 °C that feels like about −21 °C. To work these out yourself, use the heat index and wind chill calculators.

F to C in Excel, Google Sheets and code

  • Excel or Google Sheets: =(A1-32)*5/9, or =CONVERT(A1,"F","C").
  • JavaScript: const c = (f - 32) * 5 / 9;
  • Python: c = (f - 32) * 5 / 9
  • Calculator: type the Fahrenheit value, − 32, =, ÷ 1.8, =. The brackets matter: subtract first.

A common spreadsheet slip is writing =A1-32*5/9 without brackets, which subtracts only 17.8. Always put the subtraction in brackets.

F to C fast facts

  • The Fahrenheit scale puts water’s freezing and boiling points 180 degrees apart (32 °F and 212 °F); Celsius puts them 100 apart.
  • A typical American “room temperature” of 72 °F is about 22 °C.
  • On a sunny summer day, asphalt can be hotter than 140 °F (60 °C) — hot enough to burn a dog’s paws.
  • Deep frying happens at 350–375 °F, which is 177–191 °C.
  • A 10 °F change is only a 5.6 °C change, so “ten degrees warmer” in the US is a smaller jump than in Celsius countries.

Extreme temperatures in F and C

Record or referenceFahrenheitCelsius
Highest air temperature recorded (Death Valley, 1913)134 °F56.7 °C
Coldest temperature in the contiguous US (Rogers Pass, Montana, 1954)−70 °F−56.7 °C
Lowest air temperature recorded (Vostok, Antarctica, 1983)−128.6 °F−89.2 °C
Absolute zero−459.67 °F−273.15 °C

Fahrenheit numbers stretch further than Celsius ones because each Fahrenheit degree is smaller — the 180 °F between freezing and boiling water cover the same span as 100 °C.
