Mulch & Gravel Calculator
Estimate how much mulch, gravel, topsoil or sand to buy for a garden bed, path or driveway, in cubic yards, approximate tons and bags.
How to use the Mulch & Gravel Calculator
- Choose the material.
- Enter the area length and width in feet.
- Enter the depth in inches.
How it works
Cubic yards = length × width × depth (in) ÷ 12 ÷ 27. Bulk materials are sold by the cubic yard or ton; weight depends on the material and moisture (gravel ≈ 1.4 tons per yard, topsoil ≈ 1.1, sand ≈ 1.35, mulch ≈ 0.3). Recommended depths: 2–4 in of mulch, 2–3 in of gravel for paths and 4–6 in for driveways.
Coverage of one cubic yard
| Depth | Area covered |
|---|---|
| 1 in | 324 sq ft |
| 2 in | 162 sq ft |
| 3 in | 108 sq ft |
| 4 in | 81 sq ft |
| 6 in | 54 sq ft |
