Paint Application Temperature Guide
Paint needs the right temperature to cure properly. Minimum and ideal air and surface temperatures for exterior and interior painting.
Painting temperatures
| Product | Minimum | Ideal range |
|---|---|---|
| Latex (acrylic) exterior paint | 50 °F (10 °C) (some down to 35 °F) | 50–85 °F (10–29 °C) |
| Oil-based paint | 40–45 °F (4–7 °C) | 50–90 °F (10–32 °C) |
| Exterior stain | 50 °F (10 °C) | 50–90 °F (10–32 °C) |
| Primer | 35–50 °F (2–10 °C) | 50–85 °F (10–29 °C) |
| Interior paint | 50 °F (10 °C) | 60–80 °F (16–27 °C) |
Notes
Check that both the air and the surface stay above the minimum for 24–48 hours while the paint cures — surfaces in shade or at night can be colder than the air. Avoid painting above about 90 °F or in direct midday sun, which dries paint too fast and causes lap marks and blistering. Keep relative humidity under about 85% and the surface at least 5 °F above the dew point so dew does not form on wet paint.
Frequently asked questions
How cold is too cold to paint outside?
Below 50 °F for most latex paints, unless the can says low-temperature formula (down to 35 °F).
Can I paint in 90 °F weather?
Avoid it — paint dries too fast; paint in the shade or early morning.
How long does paint need to cure before rain?
Usually 2–4 hours to be rain-safe; check the label.
Does humidity affect paint?
Yes — high humidity slows drying and can cause surfactant leaching on latex.
